CLASS 8TH MENTAL ABILITY CHAPTER MATRIX ARRANGEMENT

12. Matrix Arrangement

12.1   Number Test

12.2  Time Sequence Test

12.1 number test

In this type of test a series of numbers is given. The candidate has to find out the. number of times

the  given  digit  occurs  under certain conditions.

  Illustration 1

How many 3’s are there in the following number series which are preceded by 6 but not followed by 7?
    2374356374638963518372428639
    (A)  One              (B)  Two              (C) Three              (D)  Four           (E) More than four

Solution

(C)– Reqd. 3’s are printed boldly in the series.
    2374356374638963518372428639

Illustration 2

How many numbers are there from 3 to 100 which are divisible by 4 and either unit digit or tenth digit or both include 4?
    (A) 10                     (B) 12                    (C) 19                (D)  25                (E)  Less than 10

Solution

(E)– The numbers which are divisible by 4 from 3 to 100 and include 4 at any place are printed boldly in the following numbers.
    4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 68, 72, 76, 80, 84, 88, 92,96, 100
Thus reqd. numbers are 7 in all.

Illustration 3

    If 69 × 87 = 1515 then 76 × 68 = ?
    (A)  1315                (B) 1214              (C)  1415             (D) 1317           (E)  None of these

Solution

    (E)– As,
        69 x 87 ® 1515
        6 + 9 = 15    8 + 7 = 15
    Similarly,

But 1314 is not given in any alternative.
Hence the correct answer is (E).

Illustration 4

    If 73 × 68 = 3687 then 24 × 15 = ?
    (A)  2415           (B) 5142          (C)  4152         (D)  1425           (E)  None of these

Solution

    (C)– As,

    Similarly,

Hence the correct answer is (C).

12.2 time sequence test

There are two types of questions under this.
(1)  The value of time or digit is found from the statements of two people.
The common value in the two statements is taken as correct.

Illustration 5

Manjeet remembers that his father’s birth day falls after 9th May and before 12th May,

while his sister Anandita remembers that her father’s birth day falls after 10th May and before 13th May.

What is date of birth day of their father’s ?
    (A)   9th May      (B)  10th May          (C)  11th May          (D)   12th May        (E)  None of these

Solution

(C)– According to Manjeet, his father’s birth day = May (10 and 11)
But according to Anandita her father’s birth day = May (11 and 12)
But 11th May is common to both.
Hence their father’s birth day is 11th May.
(2)  Under this head questions based on time are asked. The following shortent formula is used for this.
       Time of information given
       =

    Illustration 6

The station master said to Samant, “A train for Surat leaves after every 1-15 hours

. A train had already left 35 minutes ago. The next train will leave at 5-40.”

At what time this information was given to Samant by the station master ?
    (A)  4-25              (B)  5-00       (C)  4-45        (D)  5-15        (E)  None of these

Solution

    (B)– Time of information given = (5.40 – 1.15) + 0.35
                    = 4.25 + 0.35 = 5.00
Hence the correct answer is (B).
